Hey there!

My name is Maria and welcome to Smorgaseats! I’m the cook, baker, photographer, and blogger behind Smorgaseats. I’m also the S.O. to a handsome, bearded dude (Tom) and the fur mama to the cutest pup (Beezer).

My love for cooking started as a young child; I spent many hours watching my mom in the kitchen. Growing up, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a large family of self-taught, from-scratch, home cooks. They have truly inspired my passion (more like an obsession, really) for food and to become the cook and baker I am today.

I was born and raised in the Philippines and later moved to the United States when I was 10 years old. This jump allowed me to experience two different cultures first-hand. The recipes you’ll find here on Smorgaseats draw from my own, unique experiences in two different regions of the world. They are a celebration of east-meets-west. Some of the recipes are my own, while others are adapted from or inspired by my favorite people, places, food sites, and cookbooks. I started Smorgaseats back in 2016—in hopes to inspire others to love food (perhaps as much as I do), as well as the courage to try something new.
